A History Rooted in Faith: The Founding of St. Sharbel Maronite Catholic Mission – Stockton, California
The hand of God guides every mission, and His will has always been at the heart of the Maronite presence in Stockton. Wherever a church rises, it is a sign of divine blessing—an altar not only of worship but also of identity, unity, and hope.
The seeds of this mission were planted through the vision of Fr. Paul Mouawad, the founding pastor of Our Lady of Lebanon in San Francisco. Seeing the spiritual hunger of the Maronite faithful in Stockton, he initiated what would become the community of St. Sharbel.
His efforts were followed by the visit of Monsignor Feghali, who discerned with pastoral foresight the potential for growth among the families gathering there. Encouraged by this, Fr. Toufic Nasr—together with devoted friends from the Bay Area—took concrete steps: the first parish account was opened, a pastoral council was established, and monthly liturgies began to nourish the growing flock.
Though Fr. Gebran Bou Merhi‘s time was brief, he continued to support the mission’s development. His successor, Fr. John Nahhal, built upon those foundations. During his tenure, a significant milestone was reached: the acquisition of land, a clear sign that the mission was not only surviving but preparing to thrive.
In July 2012, a new chapter began with the arrival of Fr. Nabil Mouannes. Under his pastoral leadership, the mission took firm and steady strides. Necessary permits were secured, and the physical space began to take shape—hermitage, hall, and facilities were prepared on the land. Organizational structures were established, with committees and councils to support parish life. Spiritual vitality deepened as devotional groups formed and the celebration of the Divine Liturgy increased to three times per month.
Through prayer, perseverance, and the commitment of the faithful, the community of St. Sharbel has truly taken ownership of its land and its future. What began as a hopeful vision is now a living church, a beacon of faith in the heart of Stockton.
In 2014, Fr. Ghattas Khoury was appointed to serve the growing Stockton community. With wisdom, humility, and a fatherly spirit, he guided the faithful for over a decade. During his ministry, he also extended his pastoral service to help establish and support a new Maronite mission in Sacramento. In March 2025, after years of devoted service, Fr. Ghattas entered into his well-earned retirement, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and love.
Today, the mission of St. Sharbel stands as a living witness to the faith, resilience, and unity of its people—a community planted in hope and growing in grace.
